Safety NL provides several different driving courses that are designed to help you, your family, or even your employees stay safe on the road. We also provide courses that are required in order to reduce the points on your driving record or if you have lost your license.
We provide the following driver education courses:
Employees with a Class 5 license whose duties include driving a company vehicle can improve their safe driving skills through the SafetyNL Defensive Driving course. This is a one-day course focusing on improving skills and judgement.

The Point Reduction Course allows for a maximum of four points to be removed from your driving record and can be taken once every five years. The points will be removed; however, the convictions for any points will remain on your driver’s abstract for five years. Upon completion of this course, we will fax confirmation of your attendance to Motor Vehicle Registration so they can make the adjustment to your driver’s record.
SafetyNL does not have access to your driving record, so please direct any inquiries to the Motor Vehicle Registration office nearest you.

SafetyNL is pleased to offer private lessons for Class 5 (car) and Class 6 (motorcycle) licenses. Whether you’re looking to get ready for a road test or want an opportunity to refresh your skills with an instructor, we have options.
Please contact our office for availability and pricing. Payment is made through the SafetyNL office and the date and time are arranged directly with the instructor.
Private lessons for driving a car are 90 minutes. If you wish to use a SafetyNL vehicle for your road test, you must book a minimum of 2 lessons. The first lesson will be an assessment of your driving. If, at the conclusion, the instructor agrees that you are ready for the road test, the second lesson will consist of an hour of review and the use of the SafetyNL vehicle for the road test. The instructor will arrange the date and time. Motor Registration Division requires a $78 non-commercial road test fee for any road test done in the province. This can be paid through the student’s MyGovNL account or at the local MRD office. Students will need to have a digital or paper copy of the receipt when they go for their road test. Students must have a valid permit from Newfoundland & Labrador in order to book lessons.
Private motorcycle lessons are 1 hour with an instructor. Lessons are only available between mid-May and the end of October. You must provide your own gear (see Learn More under Learn to Ride for a list of what is required) and to be on the road, you must have your permit. The balance test is only done as part of the Learn to Ride course and cannot be done during a private lesson. Please note that our instructors are not permitted to conduct road tests for anyone who has not completed our Learn to Ride program.
The Responsible Drivers Workshop (Driver Safety Course) is a mandatory program for drivers who have lost their license due to points. SafetyNL does not have access to your driving record, so please ensure that you are taking the correct course. Please direct any inquiries to the Motor Vehicle Registration office nearest you.
The “Think First” (SHIP) program is a mandatory course for those looking to have their driver’s license reinstated. The four hour program is designed to educate you on:
The course consists of group discussions, lectures, and video presentations. You must pre-register for this program by submitting your registration form and the course fee to SafetyNL (see address below).
We do not accept personal cheques. Payment can be made by VISA or Mastercard through the website, for etransfer information please contact the office. Upon receipt of your course fee, a confirmation of registration will be forwarded to you.
Notification will be forwarded to Motor Vehicle Registration Division for processing upon completion of this course.

If you are not sure which one you are required to complete, PRIOR TO REGISTRATION please visit the Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) office nearest you or call their Teleservice at 1-877-636-6867 or 709-729-0345. Or you can email them at driverrecords@gov.nl.ca . Absolutely No Refunds if you register/attend the Think First SHIP Program and later learn that it does not meet the requirements set out by MVR.
